While re-watching this film you really catch a lot of new things that slipped past you the first time. “It has an under taste.” Things that you wouldn’t even know to look out for because you didn’t know how it ended. I won’t go into extreme detail in case you haven’t seen this film yet, but I definitely recommend it highly. It’s one of those films that is a true psychologically scary picture. Even though it’s not a 70s film per se, I still group it into that category, even if it was released in 1968.
Rosemary’s Baby Trailer Here
Mia Farrow is perfect in her role as the housewife trying to make a baby with her husband. She’s scary how good she is at this acting part. She’s vulnerable, innocent, and believable. Her transformation is also something to watch and behold. As soon as she gets her hair cut short we start to see her slip in a state of madness and paranoia. If you look at her she almost looks white as a ghost. Her face reminds me of the ghostly face that flashes during THE EXORCIST.
I love the dream/nightmare sequence that Mia has where she’s floating on the water on her mattress. And then she’s out on the boat with all the other people. The audio design in that scene is spectacular. The hushed voices and ambient sounds add to the discomfort the audience undoubtedly feels. Of course the climax of that sequence is the impregnation by the cult and the devil himself. “This is no dream, this is really happening!” I love the next act after the dream sequence. The best part is how everyone goes out of their way to make everything seem as normal as possible. Their performances are the scariest part because we believe them.
Forget all the drama with Roman Polanski’s personal life, watch this film and enjoy. It’s one of his finest.
