Shawshank Redemption

Quite possibly one of the most named films when you ask someone what their favorite films are. Why is it so highly regarded, loved, and cherished by so many people? I’ll look to answer that question, if I can, because the film truly is superb. The film stars Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins as two prison inmates that live out their days together in the same maximum security facility. There is some back story on how Tim got into that mess, but the heart of the film revolves around how Tim interacts with fellow prison mates, guards, and the system in general. The film is full of highs and lows. Moments where your gut is wrenched for Tim’s character and all he has to go through. But I believe on of the key reasons this film is so popular is because of the connection we start to share with Tim. We relate to him and to the dire circumstance that he is in.

Shawshank Redemption Trailer

I won’t go on with any more details about the story, but I really enjoy the ending immensely. There is one shot specifically where Tim has his arms thrown up during the rainstorm – if you’ve seen the trailer you probably know what shot I am talking about. It’s magnificent. And the pacing of this film is key – it takes it’s time. You really feel like you’re in prison with these guys at some moments. Morgan’s voiceover narration work also moves this film deeper into my heart. He’s probably one of the most notable and distinguishable narrators in cinematic history.

The best parts of this film are the triumphs that the characters have, and most them come from the cunning and craftiness of Tim’s character. Whether it’s the beer on the rooftop, the new library he created, or the climatic escape at the end (oh great I gave it away J) – they all give us little goosebumps of joy, and that is the exact reason why we watch film; To escape and feel that way.

Rating: 9.5/10
